Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my child is ready?
Any time your child shows interest! Truly, learning an instrument is very similar to learning to read or talk or walk - repetition, practice, and participation are all part of the learning process, and a child will be open to these things if there is an interest (and if we make it fun!)
What ages do you accept?
Typically, I will start children as young as 4 years, given that they know their numbers 1-5 and letters A-G and are able to sit for about 10 minutes at a time. Adult beginners of all ages are welcome!
What will the first lesson look like?
The first lesson is free of charge for new students. This is an opportunity for us to meet and see if we are a good fit. It is also an opportunity for me to learn your (or your child's) current skill level to determine what lesson length and materials to recommend. We will discuss your (or your child's) previous experience (if any), goals for taking lessons, and anything else you would like me to know. There is no obligation on either side to commit at the first lesson.
Do you meet students in their homes?
Lessons are held in my in-home studio, where students play on my baby grand piano and have easy access to my collection of various hands-on learning games and activities.
Where are you located?
I am located in Spring Valley, in the Casa de Oro area of East County San Diego. I will provide my address when scheduling our first lesson.
What does your virtual platform look like?
The virtual platform is a strategically-designed curriculum for 4-7 year-olds that replicates everything I teach in-studio, in the comfort of your own home. There are five levels for a one-time fee each (no monthly charges like in-person), each offering lifetime access to about 4 months worth of content. It is designed to be used by families with no musical background and includes all the learning resources, music games, songs and materials I use in my own studio, plus a few extras :)
My dream really is to make music education as accessible as possible to all. This virtual platform is one way to cut costs and still receive a high-quality piano education for the first 16 months of instruction.
What music styles do you teach?
Students will be exposed to a variety of music styles, including Classical, Contemporary/New Age, Blues, Jazz, Pop, and more. Method books I use include the Piano Adventures series by Faber, repertoire books from Keith Snell, Pathways to Artistry by Catherine Rollin, and various Alfred publications, among others. Additionally, I select skill level-appropriate pieces in various music styles to supplement concepts, technique, and styles learned in their books.
